The Brief
Innovation in Sustainable Workwear
As part of a Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) with Birmingham City University, consultancy and project management were provided for Beeswift to develop innovative, sustainable workwear solutions. The role centred on guiding the company through integrating circular economy principles into the design and production of PPE and workwear clothing: ensuring garments stayed durable, functional, and recyclable without compromising on performance. A key part of the work involved transferring knowledge and skills between the university and Beeswift, bridging academic research and practical industry expertise so that sustainability wasn’t just a design ambition, but something genuinely workable for the industry
Outcomes
The partnership delivered measurable progress across three core areas of the business, moving circularity from concept to practical implementation
- Supply chain process improvements: gaps in the new circular business model were identified and addressed, working towards a fully circular system through life cycle assessment, strengthened supplier relationships, greater supply chain transparency, and material innovation
- Materials R&D: new fabric concepts were explored and developed, ranging from modular design approaches to regenerative fibres
- Consumer insight: a database and survey system was implemented to capture customer feedback on sustainable interest, feeding directly into future product development
